This program has been created to address the challenges that arise for students making the transition from high school to full or part-time studies at the University of Toronto. The program is designed to guide students in their efforts to achieve academic, social and personal goals as a new university student. The First-Year Experience Mentors will provide incoming students with the opportunity to learn and grow through guidance, communication and leadership of a supportive community.
This program will be run using a group mentorship format where a pair of ' First-Year Experience Mentors' will be matched with a group of incoming students. The mentors will serve as co-anchors and guides to the incoming students, helping them overcome the challenges of first year with careful guidance and positive support. These meetings will occur on a monthly basis and last 2 hours each. The meetings will be a mixture of 'drop-in style' as well as themed session. Drop-in style refers to sessions where incoming students can drop-by anytime during a scheduled timeframe and ask questions/chat with their mentors as well as other first-year students. Themed sessions on the other hand will have more structure, where a certain topic of interest to incoming students will be addressed. For example, mentors might decide to hold a session on study habits/exam skills during the month of December when Midterms are just around the corner!
In addition to the monthly meet-ups, this program will also have different Academic and Social Events that will occur on a monthly basis. These events are a great way to meet other incoming students who are not part of your monthly meet-up group. Also, it can be a fun way to learn more about the city - last year we had an event where we walked over to and discovered Kensington market together. Kensington Market is often described as Toronto's most vibrant and diverse neighbourhood and it is minutes away from our campus!
