Title: PEER TUTOR (Retention, Advising, and Career Preparation)
Part-Time, Academic Year Position; No Benefits

Reports To: Program Director, Tutor Coordinator

Primary Function: The PEER TUTOR is responsible for carrying out the academic instructions given by the professor, completing CRLA tutor training requirements, attending all monthly training meetings, and carrying out tutoring methodology. In addition, he/she is directly responsible for accurately recording and maintaining ALL tutoring files and records pertaining to self and student.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Tutoring (95%)
• Obtain specific tutoring instructions from professor and maintain a clearly defined standard for proficiency
• Select most effective learning method for meeting the individual academic needs of the participant (course textbooks, workbooks, class notes, cassettes, or video); provide alternate forms of reinforcement, such as laboratory sessions and questioning
• Report to the program administrators concerning student’s progress and any unusual concerns about the program participant, which might require special counseling
• Attend required training meetings and workshops
• Complete basic level of CRLA national tutor training certification program (at a minimum)

Administrative Duties:
(5%)
• Maintain accurate records of time spent and work completed with each participant
• Administer Tutor Report Cards according to guidelines in Tutor Training handbook
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or the Program Assistant

Position Requirements:
• Education: Undergraduate student with staff and/or departmental recommendation in subject area (Candidate must receive departmental recommendation prior to hire)
• Proficiency (an “A” or “B” grade) in subject course(s)
• Some advanced course work in area of expertise
• Preferably with a 3.0 GPA or higher

Experience and Skills:
• Candidate must have excellent communication skills
• Must also be a responsible, organized individual with the knowledge of basic study skills
• Familiarity with computers desirable

Physical: This is a primarily sedentary position. It does require the ability to communicate verbally, clearly, and effectively with students, and to hear and understand students. Occasionally, tutors will conduct sessions in locations other than the tutoring center, and must be able to traverse across the campus. Tutors must be able to document their work in writing.
