Christ the King School is considering participation in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) through Nutritional Development Services (NDS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. As you may know, this is a federally funded nutrition program, which helps schools throughout the country provide hot, nutritious lunch to children. All of the public schools in the 5-county area participate in this program, and close to one hundred area catholic, private and charter schools participate as well.
School lunch provides children with one-third of their Recommended Daily Allowance for calories and other growth nutrients. Breakfast and lunch must meet USDA nutrient standards for calories, total and saturated fat, and sodium. A copy of a menu is included with this letter; as you can see, a lunch consists of an entrée, fruit, vegetable, whole grains, and skim milk. Fresh fruits and vegetables are served often throughout the week. Over the last several years, school meals have significantly improved to include a variety of foods that are nourishing and palatable for the children. NDS consistently looks for new products to offer on menus, and seeks school and student input to provide meal options that they students will enjoy.
All schools participating in the National School Lunch Program can receive free breakfast for all students. A full-priced lunch meal costs $2.50; however, based on household income, students may receive meals or free of charge. As parents and caregivers, we would like to gauge your interest in participating in the National School Lunch Program. Please take a minute to complete the survey below.
