Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC is proposing to build 2 new pipelines to transport Bakken oil and refined petroleum products between Albany, New York and Linden, NJ. This for-profit oil transport company would condemn private property to build their pipelines within feet of thousands of homes as well as schools, businesses and parks. It would permanently destroy wetlands and critical forest habitat for several endangered species, and would cut through the Highlands region, endangering the drinking water for millions. Several high-profile pipeline spills around the country in recent months have led to public health and safety emergencies, with people being forced to evacuate their homes for years and many more facing health issues and drastically reduced property values. To make matters worse, the oil would be extracted from North Dakota’s Bakken Shale via hydraulic fracturing, an extreme form of extraction that pollutes our water and air and contributes to the climate crisis.
Instead of increasing our dependence on dirty and dangerous fossil fuels, New Jersey should be investing in clean renewable energy sources like solar and offshore wind, as well as increased energy conservation. These industries don't sacrifice clean water and our health for energy, and would provide the long term, high paying jobs our state needs. I urge my elected representatives and regulatory agencies in New Jersey to oppose the Pilgrim pipelines.
