In this webinar, we will begin by questioning the purpose and position of EAP in the curriculum. Drawing on practical and insightful case studies, Bee will outline the impact that ignoring language(s) in the curriculum can have on both students and staff, before suggesting ways in which EAP can reposition itself to make language more visible. This involves working collaboratively with staff and students in the disciplines, helping to raise awareness of how language can work to either enable or deny access to knowledge, empowering or marginalising.

We hope this will lead to a full and collaborative discussion around whether and how Bee’s suggested principles and approach might be interpreted or implemented in our own contexts.

This NATESOL webinar will be particularly relevant to practitioners who are working with EAP or EAL learners in academic contexts. Everyone is welcome.


Bio: Bee Bond is an Associate Professor of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and has taught EAP at the University of Leeds since 2001, working with students to understand the language, skills, culture and context of UK higher education practices. She is currently developing embedded insessional EAP provision with Schools, ensuring that language is considered as a part of disciplinary knowledge communication.
