Refugee Settlement Interest
Mount Olivet’s work with refugees is expanding. We’d like your opinion on which activities you personally might like to help with the most. These refugees have been vetted through official State Dept. channels before they arrive in the U.S. Mount Olivet is working through Catholic Charities, one of the two resettlement agencies authorized by the State Dept. in northern Virginia. The refugees each have a caseworker, but the caseworkers must deal with hundreds of people a year, so volunteers can help enormously.

How are you interested in volunteering?
Driver/Friend
Usually Monday-Friday. Drive refugees to appointments with Health Department, school registrations, etc. This is also a way to engage individually with refugees and help them get used to American life more quickly. *This volunteer position requires 3-4 hours of training and a police fingerprint check.
Employment/Networking Mentor
Anytime during the week. Advise refugee on preparing/submitting resume, practicing for a job interview, and following job leads electronically. (Refugees are assigned an employment counselor through the resettlement agency, but volunteers are needed to take them a step further with appropriate techniques and networks for job searches.) *This volunteer position requires 3-4 hours of training and a police fingerprint check.
Apartment/Logistics Set Up
1-2 times yearly. Encourage and lead Mount Olivet members to give gift cards, metro cards, housewarming supplies to help refugees set up apartments and arrange for transit needs. *Does NOT require training.
