PyCon Canada Volunteering
Thanks for your interest in volunteering to help us run PyCon Canada smoothly. We couldn't do it without you!
Answering the following questions helps us create the weekend volunteer schedule. Expect to be given a 3 hr shift.
If you have questions or concerns, you can reach us at
What's your preferred name?
This will be put on the volunteer schedule spreadsheet which is shared publicly.
What's your phone number?
If we need to contact you during the conference, we will call this number. We will not share this number outside of the organizing team.
Have you obtained yourself a ticket?
PyCon has a long tradition where "everyone pays", including the conference organizer, as a way to support our financial aid program(where each accepted applicant gets a free ticket). This means that we do not offer free tickets to volunteers. Tickets are available here:
Are you speaking at PyCon Canada this year?
This will help us make sure we don't schedule you to speak & volunteer simultaneously.
We will be scheduling you for a single 3hr shift sometime between 7:45a-6p on Saturday and 9a-5:30p on Sunday. Let us know of any commitments/conflicts between those times!
Please check off the position(s) you're comfortable with filling.
Session Chair: Introduce the speaker, keep time, moderate Q&A, and generally keep talks running smoothly. You'll be able to sit for the majority of your shift.
Registration: Hand out badges, answer questions, give directions, general assistance. You'll be on your feet if it's busy, but can sit down when it's not.
Audio-Visual: During talks, maintain audio levels, assist speakers with getting mic'ed, assist with AV set up. You'll be able to sit during talks, some heavy lifting may be helpful but not necessary
General set up/assistance: Depending on needs, we might need "people herders", moving tables/chairs, etc. LIkely not strenuous but those with mobility issues may wish to avoid.
What is your preferred size/cut for t-shirts?
Please check the sizing charts before choosing a size! "Women's/fitted cut" here:
and "Men's/straight cut" here:
Will you be able to attend a brief orientation meeting at the venue? Friday, November 15th at 6pm.
We find it helpful to explain what we'll have you doing before the conference begins. However it is totally possible to train you before your shift.
Anything else you want to tell us?
Special skills (ex: AV experience, can juggle, good in hectic situations), any needs/accommodations you want us to know about, or happy thoughts.
Send me a copy of my responses.
