No to Armed Campus Police at RIC

Rhode Island College administration is weighing the option of arming police personnel on campus. Though intended to be a proactive measure in the name of public safety, the reality is that fire-arms provide a false sense of security and fail to address the root causes of violence or victimization. Furthermore, allowing campus police officers to carry deadly weapons would encourage a reactionary culture of policing that capitalizes on fear and militarizes spaces initially intended for learning.

We, the undersigned, are opposed to arming campus police or any other safety personnel at Rhode Island College.
