Indigenous Peoples' History Month
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month the Office of Curriculum and Instruction is offering a series of learning opportunities geared toward expanding community knowledge in areas that have been historically neglected by the curriculum. The Office of Curriculum and Instruction believes that presenting the full diversity of cultures, traditions and histories in the US is an important part of our vision. In Social Studies, Indigenous Peoples History Month offers an opportune time to educate ourselves about Indigenous People and to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Indigenous People have faced both historically and in the present, as well as the ways in which they resisted and continue to represent resilience, courage, strength and joy. As with all the heritage months, the Social Studies Department refers to this month as “History Month'' while the official name is “Heritage Month.”  As well, many of the original indigenous nations of this continent spread across what are now externally imposed national boundaries and we choose to utilize the term Indigenous People in acknowledgement of this.
