Traveling Village 3 is now full and there currently is a waitlist. At this point it’s unlikely that new spots for the trip will open up, but you are welcome to fill out this form if you want to be on the waitlist. We will send you a confirmation within a week to confirm your spot on the waitlist.

  • 20 families with an approximate total of 70 people

This application is designed to give the organizers information about your family and help them decide who will be contacted for a video call and the onboarding process. Filling out the form means you are serious about going on the trip. Before filling out this application, please read the website, which has a lot of detailed information about the trip. We highly recommend filling out the form with your partner (if applicable) so the answers reflect your whole family as much as possible. Based on the initial feedback, the organizers expect that TV3 to Asia will be popular, so if possible, please try to spend an hour filling out this application. Well-thought-out answers from the whole family involved will help your family, and the organizers assess whether the trip is a good fit. If you have been on TV1 (Traveling Village in Asia during early 2024) or are going on TV2 (2025 Europe Campervan), please take the time to fill out this form. The organizers will reduce the onboarding process as your family is already familiar with the concept.

There are no right or wrong answers to most of these questions. We are not looking for a typical correct answer, as every family has unique circumstances. The questions are designed so the organizers can get to know your family and help you decide if this is the right time for this trip. Some questions are similar; this is on purpose, as asking questions in slightly different ways may help get other perspectives.

After completing this form, the goal is to send you a reply within a week, but depending on the volume of replies and the timing, it may take longer. If you are concerned that the organizers didn’t get your application or that you may have missed their reply, please contact them at hi@travelingvillage.com. There have been cases in the past where an application was never received. When sending a message, it will help to include some information from this application so they can match your communication with the submitted application.

Please make sure you submit the correct email address. In the past, follow-up emails have been sent to families, and the organizers have never received a reply.

Home
Where do you call home? Why did you decide to live there? What country is your passport issued from?
Family Size
How many family members (including yourself) would be going? If you feel comfortable sharing, please include age and gender. While the village is centered around families with children, the trip is open to individuals and couples.
Interest Level
What is the interest level for each family member with the idea of traveling together for four months in three locations with 19 other families in Asia? Why are you and your family interested in this trip? What are you hoping to get out of the trip?
Family Travel Experience
Have you traveled as a family? Where? For how long? Do you have an example of a good, bad, or interesting travel adventure? Traveling as a family can be difficult sometimes, and having some travel experience can help determine what works well for your family.
Easiest/Hardest
What do you think will be each family member's hardest challenge during the trip? What will be the easiest for each of your family members? On TV1, there was a lot of community time during the trip, and some adults and children had to make sure they found the right amount of alone time to recharge.
Family Obstacles
What do you think will be your family's biggest obstacle on the trip? Going on a four-month trip in Asia can be challenging, and obstacles can vary a lot for each family. Some examples of obstacles could be financial, work-related, school-related, kids missing activities, medical issues, etc.
Work
Are you or another family member going to be working during the trip? Will the work be full-time? Is there a particular timezone for the work? From TV1 learning, some families realized that it is challenging if both adults are working, especially if the working time is during the off hours.
Home Concerns
Are you leaving your house empty while traveling? Is the home being rented? Are you leaving pets behind? Is there a concern about aging parents? Is four months too long of a time to be away? While these may not be an issue for your family, it can be a problem for some families.
Planner
Do you consider yourself a short-term or long-term planner? Depending on when you fill out this form, it could be up to 12 months before the start of the village in Vietnam. For some people, this is way too far out to plan, and others might not have enough time.
Communal Funds
There will be community funds that every family will need to contribute. As the name implies, the community funds are designed to help promote community during the trip. The community funds include group meals (possibly about once per week), the Nest (about 4 days a week), and events/activities. The events and activities can be in conjunction with the group meals or during Nest hours. There is also a sign-up fee that goes to running the TV and making it sustainable in the long term. The total amount of funds (sign-up fee + community funds) will be about $3,700 (the exact amount depends on the age of the children and family size). This amount does not include lodging, airfare, and other family expenses. For more information, view the budget planner sheet. Is this amount acceptable to you? Additional thoughts about the communal funds and sign-up fee?
Nest
The Nest is new for TV3. The Nest is a central place for adults and kids to hang out four days a week, three hours daily. The Scouts and parents can help with engaging activities for the children. It is a place to meet up with other village members, have meet-ups, play, or work. There will be a workgroup that organizes the Nest and every family will need to help make it a success. There was an effort in TV1 to have a community hub, but it didn’t work out, and this is an experiment that the organizers think could work well for TV3. What do you think about the Nest? How do you think your family would benefit from the Nest?
Scouts
The Scouts are two dedicated team members. While no Scouts have been selected at this time, the idea is that they are probably in their 20’s or 30's and work well with children. Their role will be to help plan the Nest and run the activities during each Nest day. While the primary focus of the Scouts will be the Nest, they can also assist with childcare for families that need extra support. Individual families would pay for any additional work by the Scouts. What do you think of Scouts? Is there a situation where you may want to hire them for extra support?
Lodging

The idea with calling it a village is that every family can live as they want. Families have different needs and budgets, so they should try to get the lodging that fits them. Each family is responsible for their own lodging, but as a community it makes a lot of sense to work together for both research and booking things together (several apartments in the same building or a coliving setup). It is also the goal for TV3 to have all the families within a short walking distance from each other. What type of lodging would work best for your family? What interest does your family have for a co-living setup?

Education
TV3 will happen during the school year for most traditional schools. If you have older kids, how do you plan to educate them during the trip? How long have you been doing this type of education? There are many ways to educate, everything from unschooling to a full curriculum. The organizers are curious to hear what system you plan to use during the trip.
Sharing the Workload
While the founding families are doing the majority of the pre-work (setting up the framework for the trip, choosing and onboarding families), the families will share the work on the trip. Some preliminary workgroups have been set up, and every adult is asked to sign up for at least one workgroup and be active within that workgroup both before and during the trip. By working for the village, you will impact the community, which is a good way to create bonds with other members. Are you ok with being part of workgroups and sharing the work?
Community Living
Does any member of your family have experience living in a community? During this trip, your family will be living in close proximity with other families, including in group settings. Community living can be challenging but also rewarding.
Communication
While some people are better at communicating online and others are better at communicating in person, everyone will need to communicate online before the trip starts and during the trip. TV3 will be using the digital tool called Slack for our group communications. The village will also use Google Meetings, Google Calendar, and WhatsApp. If you don’t know Slack (or any other communication tools), a guide will help you get started. To make our group function as a village,  all adults must participate on the Slack platform before and during the trip. If one adult in the family is less active in Slack, the partner should be more involved. What is your communication preference? Do you have experience using Slack and any other online communication tools?
Onboarding
After completing this form, the next step will be a 1st and 2nd video call with the organizers. These calls would start in early February. The next step is onboarding, which can take some focused time as we want families to complete the onboarding within two weeks. If a family is focused, they can even complete the onboarding within two days! When the family is ready for onboarding, we ask that the family find time to focus and reply to messages within a day. Would this work in your schedule to have time to focus on the onboarding in the next month?
All in Agreement
Are all members of your family in agreement with this trip? Another way to say it is, how excited are all the family members, how much are finances a concern, and how confident are you about finding the time to take this trip? Do you have time to spend before the trip starts to participate in workgroups and meet other families online? Typically, one family member will be super excited about the trip and another member less excited; sometimes that balances out, and other times, it can result in a family not going. You should include older children in the discussion as they may have much to say about this type of adventure.
