APIAVote-MI's Youth Leadership Core (YLC) is accepting applications for its 2018-2019 program. APIA stands for Asian Pacific American Islander and is under the organization APIAVote-MI which is a non-profit that focuses on grassroots mobilization, civic engagement, leadership development, and coalition building. YLC stands for "Youth Leadership Core", which is a program created for and by youth, in other words, applicants like you!
Is this program right for me?Are you someone who wishes to learn more about social justice? Are you someone who is often told that they are too young to have a voice/opinion? Do you wish to have an active role in your community but don't know where to begin? Are you someone who identifies as apart of the APIA spectrum and want to represent?
Our mission is to empower youth (ages 14-22) with skills to address relevant social justice issues, while also building friendships and networks across youth communities in Metro Detroit. We focus on giving you, the youth, a platform to speak, represent, and engage with others from all walks of life comfortably and within a safe space.
Participants in the YLC program will:
• Develop a broader understanding of political impact of community power • Deepen their awareness and improving their ability of civic participation and how to build political power • Strengthen core leadership skills to engage more fully in organizing, advocacy, and issue campaigns. • Learn how to operate with a Pan-Asian identity, rooted in knowledge of Asian American History, activism and resistance • Identify long-term leadership goals and developing a clear plan to increase their community involvement. • Feel empowered and equipped to take on greater leadership roles in their community. • Have a framework for understanding Asian American identity through a racial equity lens and our connection specifically to other communities of color in this Metro Detroit region.
The program will consist of two components (summer and fall/spring). The fall/spring program will begin in October and last through May 2019 with one training biweekly. Schedules are subject to change.
