Planning and Zoning Council (44P&Z) Interest Form

The 44th Ward Planning and Zoning Council (44P&Z), initiated by Alderman Bennett Lawson, is a community-oriented platform aimed at guiding and enhancing the trajectory of development in the 44th Ward. Constituents and community stakeholders compose this council, allowing for a diverse range of voices, insights, and perspectives to be heard and considered.


44Z&P's primary objective is to serve as a conduit between the local community and the city's urban planning and development processes. This dynamic council hosts roundtable discussions and encourages a robust dialogue that ultimately drives meaningful change within the Ward's developmental landscape.


The 44th Ward Planning and Zoning Council will champion a balanced approach to neighborhood development – one that blends economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social inclusivity. We want to make sure we encourage gentle density, respecting our neighborhoods character and charm. As well as providing incentives for our naturally affordable housing, and working with new developments that fall into the Affordable Requirements Ordinance. By facilitating community input and providing a forum for deliberation and decision-making, the 44P&Z embodies Alderman Bennett Lawson's commitment to fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive 44th Ward, where everyone feels valued and empowered to shape their community's future.


Areas of Focus:

Updating the 44th Ward Community Plan: The 44P&Z's foremost task is to actively participate in the process of updating the 44th Ward Community Plan. This work involves considering the community's changing needs, studying demographic trends, evaluating the Ward's strengths and areas for improvement, and developing a comprehensive, forward-thinking plan that will shape the 44th Ward’s future.

Development Proposal Review: The council reviews and provides constructive feedback on specific development proposals. In doing so, the 44P&Z ensures that new developments align with the community's character, meet the needs of residents, and contribute positively to the Ward's growth and prosperity.

Citywide Ordinances and Development Trends: 44P&Z also engages in in-depth discussions around citywide ordinances and emerging trends in urban development, such as Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Transit-Oriented Development (TODs). This focus allows the council to make informed recommendations that are contemporary, sustainable, and beneficial to the community.
