On June 11th, 2020 the City of Berkeley launched Berkeley Healthy Streets and on August 28th, 2020 there was a relaunch of the program with a more robust barrier approach. During the month of April 2021, the program expanded, adding several new segments.
The goal of the program is to make neighborhood streets safer to walk, jog, roll and bicycle, creating wider spaces than our current sidewalks allow. On these streets residents can make essential outdoor trips using the roadway while reducing foot traffic at parks and on outdoor trails, which have experienced extremely high usage since the region-wide Shelter-in-Place orders began.
