The 2020 Decadal Survey has emphasized the need for astronomers to take an active role in removing barriers to pursuing careers in astronomy. For example, the 2021 NASA Hubble Fellowship Program Review has highlighted the importance of broadening the participation of prospective applicants beyond the typical small subset of institutions that usually host fellows, as well as encouraging the expansion of fellowships awards among many different types of institutions, independently of their resources.
The purpose of AMP-UP (Astronomy Mentorship Program for Upcoming Postdocs) is for current and previous postdoc prize fellows (from all prize fellowship programs, e.g. NHFP, AAPF, MPS-ASCEND, 51 Peg, institution-hosted, etc) to provide professional and academic advice and support to PhD students and early-career postdocs performing astronomy-related research, especially those who may not otherwise have access to the resources and connections that many prize fellows have benefited from. We seek to expand the pool of competitive and qualified recipients of independent prize fellowships, which have traditionally served as a key stepping stone for leadership positions in astronomy. AMP-UP invites applicants and mentors of all nationalities and affiliated with US-based or international institutions. If insufficient mentors are available to support a large number of international applicants, these will be triaged alongside US-based applicants to accommodate a balanced applicant pool.
A description of the AMP-UP program is available at https://amp-up.space/mentorship.html.
