Today, the federal judiciary is front and center in the media and the political process. The furor resulting from the death of US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and the vacancy he left on our nation’s highest court has elevated this issue. Within hours of the news of Justice Scalia’s passing, the Senate Republican leadership stated their intention to block the process of filing the vacancy in a fair and timely manner. Even with the recent nomination of Judge Merrick Garland, certain senators continue to obstruct the process. President Obama has fulfilled his constitutional obligation and named an experienced jurist to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. Now the Senate must do their job -- as clearly stated in Article II of the US Constitution -- to "advise and consent" on the nominee.
