About Chennai Red Knights (CRK):
Chennai Red Knights is the Blood donation wing of Chennai Trekking Club. We are actively involved in arranging donors for surgeries, emergency requests and blood camps. Owing to our regular volunteer support, we have arranged 2000+ units of blood and supported more than 2000 patients in addition to our blood camps. Our main focus of support are the 50+ innocent kids battling against blood cancer and other need full emergencies at the Egmore government Child Hospital along with few others hospitals in Chennai.

Inviting you all for the next CRK Blood Donation drive 2nd Oct 2016 between 9am to 1 pm in Rajiv Gandhi General Hosptal,Central and Chrompet Government Hospital.This event will alleviate the fear of blood donation to first time donors and create awareness on the selfless support we could render to these cancer warriors.We are earnestly seeking your valuable donation of 350ml/ 1 unit of blood / blood products once in 3-4 months ; if you are in the active healthy donor category of 18-60 years of age group. By this selfless service you are not only a savior of life; but also a dutiful fitness freak , reviving yourself and family members in good health.

Who can donate Blood?
§ Age 18 - 59 years old (60 - 65, regular donor)
§ Weight Above 50 kg
§ Blood Pressure Between 90 - 140 mmHG (Systolic), 60 - 100 mmHG (Diastolic)
§ Pulse Rate 50 - 100 beats per minute
§ Body Temperature below 37 degrees Celsius
§ Hemoglobin 12.5 g/ dL

Who should not donate blood?
§ Pregnant or lactating women or those who have recently had an abortion
§ Anyone on steroids, hormonal supplements or certain specified medication
§ Anyone who has undergone surgery in the previous six months
§ Anyone who has consumed alcohol in the 24 hours prior to donation
§ Anyone who has donated blood and doesn't completed 90 days
§ Anyone who has been inflicted with the below mentioned health issues should not donate blood
o Heart disease, Kidney disease, Liver problems, Blood disorders, Asthma, Chest pain, High BP, Cancer, Unexplained fever, Fatigue, Night sweats, Enlarged lymph nodes in armpits, White patches in the mouth, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, TB, HIV etc.,

Benefit to the blood donor
§ Blood donation stimulates production of new cells
§ Personal health check. You will know your blood type and hemoglobin.

Preparations before donating blood
§ Have enough rest and sleep
§ No alcohol intake 24 hours prior to blood donation
§ No medications for at least 24 hours prior to blood donation
§ Have something to eat prior to blood donation, avoid fatty foods
§ Drink plenty of fluid like water or juice

After donating blood
§ Drink plenty of fluids like water or juice
§ Do not lift heavy objects
§ Do not operate big machines

§ Will donating blood make me weak?

No, it will not make you weak, donating 450cc will not cause any ill effects or weakness. The human body has the capacity to compensate with the new fluid volume. Further, the bone marrow is stimulated to produce new blood cells which in turn makes the blood forming organs function more effectively.
§ How often can a person donate?

A healthy individual may donate every three months
§ How long will it take to donate blood?

The whole process of donating blood from the registration up to the time you rest will only take an average of 30 minutes
The blood extraction will take about 5-8 minutes and the volume will be replenished within 24 hours then the cells within weeks. Essentially, by the end of the month, the body will have the same amount of blood before the blood donation.
§ Will I contract disease through blood donation?

No, we use sterile, disposable needles and syringes
§ Can a person who has tattoo still donate blood?

If the tattooing procedure is done a year ago, he/she may donate. This is also the same with ear piercing, acupuncture and other procedures involving needles.
P.S- A humble request to all donors to be punctual, responsible and considerate when you commit to bleed for a patient, understanding the emergencies involved in coordinating the blood donation drives. Last minute drop outs for these events are not easy to tackle with in life threatening situations or when surgeries are fixed after the confirmation of donors.
