COP23 Side Event: A Human Rights Based Approach to Climate Action

WHEN: Friday, 17 November, 12:00-13:00
WHERE: Fiji Pavilion, Bonn Zone, COP23
SPONSORS: CIVICUS, Action for Sustainable Development, PIANGO

This side event will examine the procedural and substantive nexus between the Paris Climate Change Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals and human rights instruments. In particular the event will examine how existing human rights instruments can be used to monitor the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. The event will identify how existing expert and peer-review mechanisms mandated by the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies can strengthen accountability across these agreements. In doing so, we hope to complement ongoing consultations about how international human rights commitments and accountability mechanisms can be integrated into the Paris Climate Agreement and the SDGs.

Specifically the event will seek to:

-Examine the relationship between the Paris Climate Agreement, the SDGs, and human rights instruments.
- Present recommendations on how to link review mechanisms between the UNFCCC, High Level Political Forum and the Human Rights Council.
- Share insights from community-based initiatives in the Pacific and other vulnerable countries, on ways to assist marginalised communities to adapt to climate change and protect their human rights.

Panelists:

-Makereta Waqavonovono, PIANGO, Fiji
-Sébastien Duyck, Center for International Environmental Law
-Oli Henman, CIVICUS & Action for Sustainable Development
-Representative from CAN International
