This study seeks to investigate how well an original web-based computer game, The Enemy Within, communicates information about the progression of cancer.

Participants will be requested to complete a questionnaire. During this questionnaire, participants will be prompted to play the game in a separate browser tab. This will take approximately 20 minutes.

The game will involve completing a short tutorial, followed by one play through of the main game. Instruction on how to play are embedded within the game.

Upon finishing the game, participants should return to the questionnaire browser tab and complete the second part of the questionnaire. Note - no responses will be recorded until this second half has been fully completed.

The questionnaire will ask participants a series of questions related to their understanding of cancer and the factors that impact on the progression of cancer.

Participants will not be asked to submit personal sensitive data as part of this study. The emphasis of the questions will be on participant understanding, having played the game.

The complete session should take about 30 minutes to complete.

Participants will be required to complete the entire study, including the game and questionnaire, while sat at a computer.

Participants are free to withdraw from completing the study at any time and for any reason. As all data will be fully anonymised at the point of submission (no data will be collected that will make it possible to identify the participant) it will not be possible to withdraw your consent to use data once it is submitted.

Researchers are obliged to retain research data for up to 10 years’ post-publication, however your anonymised research data may be retained indefinitely (e.g., so that researchers engage in open practice and other researchers can access their data to confirm the conclusions of published work). Researchers retain consent forms for as long as we continue to hold information about the data subject and for 10 years for published research (including Research Degree thesis).

Article 9 (2) j: processing is necessary for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes in accordance with Article 89(1) based on Union or Member State law which shall be proportionate to the aim pursued, respect the essence of the right to data protection and provide for suitable and specific measures to safeguard the fundamental rights and the interests of the data subject.

Where applicable, this form is prepared in consultation with Article 13 of EU GDPR legislation, detailing the information to be provided where personal data are collected from the data subject.
