Hinckley Police Department Police Officer Job Application
POLICE OFFICER- The Hinckley Township Police Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill full-time and part-time Police Officer positions. The work of a part-time Hinckley Police Officer is the same as that of a full-time Hinckley Police Officer, with the exception of being limited to 1500 hours a year, including accrued overtime.

The Hinckley Police Department is a 24-hour, full service police department that investigates all criminal and traffic matters within the Township of Hinckley. The ten OPOTA certified men and women of the Hinckley Police Department work collaboratively with the community, and our 8,000 residents, to provide quality, professional, and fair crime prevention and law enforcement services, with integrity, and respect.

1. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
2. Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
3. Must have valid Ohio Driver License
4. Must be OPOTA (Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy) Certified.
5. Must have no felony or serious misdemeanor criminal record, other than minor traffic violations.
6. Must be able to pass extensive background investigation.
7. Must be able to pass prior to appointment or has within the past year passed the OPOTA Physical Fitness Assessment, or a reasonably similar Fitness Test from the applicants current agency.
7. Must pass a medical exam given by a designated physician and a psychological exam given by a designated psychologist certifying that the applicant meets the physical and psychological requirements necessary to perform the duties of a police officer and must pass a drug screen test.
8. Must not have tattoos, body art or branding that is visible while in the uniform of the day, upon appointment.
PHASE #1 - Applications will be reviewed for accuracy and completion, then a preliminary driver’s license and criminal background check will be conducted. Applicants who have no criminal record and a minor driving record may qualify to be elevated to Phase #2.
PHASE #2 - Applicants will be required to personally pick up, sign for, complete, and return a personal history packet from the Hinckley Police Department. Further information as to the selection process and requirements will be included within the packet.
PHASE #3 – Interviews will be conducted by a panel consisting of the Chief of Police, Sergeants and Patrol Officers. Additional interviews with the department’s Chief of Police and Township Trustees may follow.
PHASE #4 – In-depth Background Investigation including – Psychological Testing, Polygraph Testing, Physical and Drug Testing.
Nature of Work
Under supervision of a Sergeant, a Police Officer patrols a designated area ensuring compliance with all applicable State Laws and Township Resolutions; answers calls when a crime is suspected or an emergency exists; takes such actions as are necessary to prevent crime, to apprehend a criminal, to maintain safety, to assist citizens in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations; and performs other related duties, tasks, and assignments as required and directed by a Sergeant, or the Chief of Police. The Hinckley Police Department subscribes to the “Community-Oriented Policing” philosophy and, therefore, the primary emphasis of the position involves community service. Officers are required to take a problem-solving approach to the situations they encounter on a day-to-day basis and to interact with the residents on a regular basis to address relevant concerns facing their neighborhoods.
Essential Functions of Work (May not include all duties performed.)
Drive a police vehicle, patrolling designated area.
Report unsafe conditions, such as obstructions in streets.
Issue citations for violations of traffic laws.
Makes arrests, sometimes requiring the use of physical effort.
Investigate accidents, determining conditions, causes and other pertinent facts regarding accident.
Conduct investigation of crimes, preserve crime scene, gather and preserves evidence.
Check doors and windows of homes and businesses for security.
Testify in court.
Assist injured persons, notifies families of injury.
Answer inquiry; assist stranded motorist.
Look for and investigate conditions or situations which may indicate a crime is about to be, or has been, committed.
Maintain records and prepare reports of incidents and activities.
Take statements from witnesses and suspects.
Where juveniles are involved, interview parents, appear in court, and works with school authorities.
Direct and regulates traffic.
Attend neighborhood meetings to address and evaluate the concerns of the citizens.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Must be physically capable of successfully performing the essential job functions of a Police Officer and be free of medical conditions that would preclude one from successfully performing said functions or would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others.

Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this classification.
Compliance with training directives established by supervisory personnel.
