OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES (please review before making selections below)
ACTIVITY: CODE IS: YOUR VOICE

Grades: 3-8
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Asynchronous

Students and teachers can enjoy interactive coding experiences with BSD Education’s Code Is: Your Voice series. Video tutorials and BSD’s scaffolded learning environment will guide students through creating websites and games. Create an account to save your work and access Sandbox Mode for a free-form creative coding environment.

Technology Requirements:
-Computer; tablet minimum
-Internet connection and web browser

ACTIVITY: CODEQUILT PHILADELPHIA

Grades: 6-12
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Asynchronous

CodeQuilt is an Hour of Code activity that introduces grades 6-12 students to basic programming concepts on Scratch while engaging them in critical conversations about the importance of diversity in the field of computing, both with respect to people and creations. Students will be provided with a template on Scratch with basic building blocks that can be remixed while the class participates in conversations around representation and student identity in relation to computing. A student guide, teacher guide and a video are provided to jumpstart class discussion. CodeQuilt was designed by Dr. Yasmin Kafai and her students at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.

Technology Requirements:
-Computer with a modern web browser
-Internet connection

ACTIVITY: CYBER SECURITY @ THE AIRPORT

Grades: 7-12
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Two synchronous sessions: Tuesday, December 7 at 8:30 - 9:30 AM AND 10:00 - 11:00 AM

This hands-on activity, led by instructors from the Baldwin School, provides an introduction to the field of cyber security. During the “Terminal” game, students will engage with a data breach simulation within various roles.  They will begin to understand that in each role, there are different needs to consider.  It is important to note that the roles are that of an ethical hacker, and by thinking like an adversary, we can help prevent and deter cyber crime.

Technology Requirements:
-Computer with a modern web browser
-Internet connection
-Web conferencing (Zoom) access

ACTIVITY: MUSIC VISUALIZER

Grades: 9-12 (School District of Philadelphia students only)
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Asynchronous. Also available for two synchronous sessions: Monday, December 6 8:30-9:30 AM AND 10:00-11:00 AM

This activity allows students to create a music visualization using a fast Fourier transform (FFT), an algorithm widely used for applications in engineering, music, science, and mathematics. Having some knowledge of programming is helpful, but not required. Note to teachers: While not required, knowing some JavaScript will be helpful, as will familiarity with the P5 library (the JavaScript equivalent of Processing), which is a bit different than traditional JavaScript.

The two synchronous sessions will be led by the Codio curriculum developer who designed this activity. The activity will also be available throughout the week for teachers to lead at a time of their choosing. Codio will offer an optional online training session on Thursday afternoon, December 2 (details provided upon registration).

Technology Requirements:
-School District of Philadelphia email address
-Computer with a modern web browser
-Internet connection
-Their own music in MP3 format (optional)
-Headphones (optional, but it can keep the room from getting too noisy)

ACTIVITY: PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE ME

Grades: 6-8
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Two synchronous sessions: Thursday, December 9 at 12:30 - 1:30 PM AND 1:45 - 2:45 PM

Students will be led by instructors from BSD Education for a virtual class to explore two coding languages while building a website about the people who inspire them. Students will learn HTML and CSS while they create a website about three inspiring people. Part of BSD’s Code Is: Your Voice series students will begin their journey of using technology to express themselves. Note: Space is limited to two classes; see times below.

Technology Requirements:
-School/District email address
-Computer; tablet minimum
-Internet connection and web browser
-Web conferencing (Zoom or Google Meet) access
-Headphones

ACTIVITY: PIXEL PANDEMONIUM

Grades: 9-12
Duration: 1 hour
Time/Date: Asynchronous

Students work individually or in teams to recreate a GIF image, with each working on a small part of the overall picture. Students learn to decode the image’s code, then fill in their colors on an electronic image of a banner by clicking each pixel and filling it in with a color provided on the pallet. A short instructional video will be provided for teachers. This activity was designed by Drs. Jeffrey Popyack of Drexel University and William M. Mongan of Ursinus College.

Technology Requirements:
-Computer with a modern web browser
-Internet connection

ACTIVITY: PYTHON PROGRAMMING

Grades: Girls in grades 5-8
Duration: 2 hours
Time/Date: (Synchronous) Saturday, December 11, 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Note: Space is limited to 35 girls.

Did you know that Disney, Netflix, Google and NASA, just to name a few, are all using Python? Python can be used for creating web applications, automation, programming robots and artificial intelligence. Python is the language of choice from beginners to experts.  Come join this workshop and learn to make your own Python Program. No experience necessary!  Open to girls in 5th-8th grade.
