Rethinking Waste - What We If We Connect Through Waste?

Sharing Session: Rethinking Waste - “What if We Connect Through Waste?"

Collaboration of Dutch Design Foundation Program - Co/Lab Rethinking Waste Team - with the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague

"What if we connect through waste?"

Starting from 25 May 2025, Mayra Kapteijn (@ayaykapteijn), Noud Sleumer (@noudsleumer), Dhania Yasmin (@dhaniayasmin), and Ade Amelia (@ameadelia), two Dutch designers and two Indonesian designers as part of @dutchdesignfoundation Dutch Design Foundation’s Co/Lab Project, came together to dive deep into Indonesia’s waste landscape — from downstream to upstream — meeting communities, changemakers, and stakeholders to reimagine a better future for waste.

During the research, designers witnessed the collective action of communities in waste management that creates a lively neighbourhood. Waste is not only an individual issue, but the best solutions are found in togetherness. Social connection can be the catalyst for better waste management, and conversely, waste movements can become powerful vehicles for connection.

This September, the Indonesian designers will travel to the Netherlands to visit waste initiatives, explore social design projects, connect with fellow designers, and gather insights. Through this opportunity, the Co/Lab Rethinking Waste team wishes to share its findings and experiences with Indonesian students residing in the Netherlands.

We welcome everyone interested in sustainability topics and who wishes to discuss at
