Petition
To: Arne Sorenson, CEO, Marriott International
Unionized workers at Marriott hotels across the country, organizing with UNITE HERE, have been on strike in eight cities for more than three weeks to demand good, stable jobs — jobs that can support their families in the communities where they work. In the face of rapid change in the hotel industry, they are also breaking new ground by demanding the right to negotiate the deployment of new technologies in their workplaces.
The striking Marriott workers recognize that technology has the potential to improve their lives, and they are not opposed to technological change. But they know that technology deployed solely in the pursuit of corporate profit will only serve to undermine their power and agency.
We are STEM workers, educators and activists who understand that technological development, in and of itself, is not automatically a social good. For technology to reach its full potential in improving the world, workers and communities must have democratic control over its implementation. The Marriott strikers are forging a path toward a future where technological progress benefits everyone. They have shown inspiring courage leading this fight and we stand behind them one hundred percent.
We call on Marriott to meet the demands of its workers immediately and settle a contract without further delay.
