Sports at HNPS (Community)
We are always reflecting on and refining our processes at HNPS. Our main aim is to promote a life-long love of physical activity by providing a range of positive sporting experiences for our Tamariki, while also providing challenges relevant to each child's skills and experience.

This is a focus on the HNPS sporting teams, events and opportunities, it DOES NOT include Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming and the Fitness or Physical Education sessions at school.

Term 4 2021, we sent a survey out to 268 Year 4-6 kids (and will send it out again in Term 4, 2022. Below is a summary of the results we received.
82% of kids had played sport for HNPS
85% said they enjoyed playing sports, 13% said sometimes
83% said they had lots of opportunities to play all sorts of different sports throughout the year
The answers to 'What are the main reasons you play sport?' were overwhelmingly; to have fun, to play with my friends, to keep fit and healthy and to get better at my sport

We really value our parent volunteers who coach, manage, car-pool and help out in anyway they can with our sports teams. A huge THANK YOU to all of you!
We used the Balance is Better approach https://balanceisbetter.org.nz/about/  in 2021 and again in 2022 with the Year 5/6 Cricket, Hockey and Netball teams. Instead of having one top team, numbers allowed us to have two (or three for Year 5 netball) 'like-ability' teams in the top Divisions. This provided more of our Tamariki the opportunity to play alongside their peers, be coached by experienced and committed coaches and to refine and develop their skills and knowledge of the game to a higher level while still in a competitive playing environment.
NOTE: the opportunity to be in the 'top team' and represent the school was still available through our inter-school exchanges (Hereworth, Te Mata, Greenlock and Cameron Graham).
