Elgin Pride does not want to stifle free speech, engaging conversations, or discussion of topics of importance to the LGBTQ+ community. These can all be accomplished by having discussions with a certain expected decorum and in compliance with IRS tax law related to not-for-profits under tax code Exemption requirements - 501(c)(3) organizations.
As such, the following are required if attending this meeting:
• You must register to attend
• If able, have your camera on and be dressed appropriately (same as if you were in person)
• Please attempt to be on time
• Join the meeting muted, please
• Leave your phone on quiet and faced down
• Use non-offensive language. Personal attacks, use of hate speech, or foul language will merit removal from the meeting.
• Let everyone speak. Elgin Pride will introduce the candidate and then ask five questions (identical questions for all candidates) related to LGBTQ+ policy and ordinances that a City Councilmember would be involved in. Then, attending participants will have the chance to ask questions.
• City of Elgin Council Positions are not party affiliated: The Elgin City Council is a nonpartisan elected body comprised of one mayor and eight city council members who are elected to four-year terms to serve at-large.
• Be the change you want to see in the world: this is meant to be informative and arm you with knowledge to take with you to the voting booth.
