Food Fellows Application
Thank you for your interest in the Second Harvest Food Bank Food Fellows Program!

Second Harvest Food Bank envisions an Orange County with food and nutritional security for all. Food banks play a critical role in addressing food insecurity, but we can’t do it alone.

WHAT IS THE NEED?

Currently, over 330,000 people are food insecure in Orange County, including 85,000 children.  Food insecurity is the condition of not having access to sufficient nutritious food to meet one's basic needs.

WHAT IS THE FOOD FELLOWS PROGRAM?

The Food Fellows are students from Orange County colleges and universities that would like to be involved in government and community engagement activities surrounding food and nutritional insecurity.  Students take part in activities to support the Food Bank as well as community advocacy activities to bring awareness to hunger issues.

WHO CAN APPLY TO BE A FOOD FELLOW?

Individual students at Orange County colleges and universities.  Established campus groups and clubs can also apply to be involved in the program.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Accepted applicants will be required to complete the online Food Fellows training course.  The course will teach you about food insecurity, the work of Second Harvest Food Bank, and how to get involved in advocacy for hunger issues here in Orange County.

Once trained, you will work with Second Harvest staff to identify the level of engagement for you/your group.  That might be volunteering regularly at the Food Bank, bringing a group of students to tour the Food Bank, hosting on-campus events for hunger issues, starting a virtual food or donation drive, engaging with elected officials about food insecurity, or other engagement activities.

Food Fellows are expected to commit to at least one quarter/semester of participation in the program, with a maximum program involvement of up to two academic years.

WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE?

Food Fellows are an official part of Second Harvest Food Bank's Government & Community Engagement Program.  As such, you will be able to receive service hour and/or course credit for the program.  You will also receive a certificate upon completion of your program involvement.  There will also be opportunity for resume building and networking with government officials and other nonprofit professionals.
**Please note - the Food Fellows program is NOT an internship or field study placement.  The nature of the program is self-paced and self-guided.  However, we are happy to sign off on any volunteer hours completed.

Thank you for your application!
