We, the undersigned businesses of the coastal recreation, tourism, and fisheries sectors are opposed to seabed mining off the California coast. Seabed mining is a destructive practice that damages the seafloor, pollutes the ocean, and harms marine life. Allowing seabed mining off of California would threaten our marine ecosystems and negatively impact businesses and communities that depend on a healthy coastal environment.

Coastal recreation, tourism, and fisheries are major economic drivers for California communities and the state as a whole. According to the National Ocean Economics Program, California’s ocean recreation, tourism and fisheries sectors support over 438,000 jobs and generate a combined $24 billion for the state’s economy. Allowing seabed mining off our coasts will unnecessarily put these jobs and economic benefits at risk.

As stewards of our nation’s public resources and coastal economies, we ask for your leadership in protecting our ocean ecosystems and coastal communities from the destructive practice of seabed mining.
