Thank you for taking the time to share your input! Survey responses are due by end of day SUNDAY, JULY 12 - after which they will be reviewed by Commissioner Hardesty and staff to inform the final proposal.

Commissioner Hardesty believes that one piece of police accountability must include truly independent police oversight, and that’s why she’s working on a proposal with community advocates for council to refer a ballot measure for the November elections.

Based on initial conversations, here is the framework for what's needed in a new system to provide real accountability:

• Completely independent body
• Adequate funding
• Subpoena and evidence gathering powers
• Disciplining powers
• Impact on PPB directives and policies

Why is Commissioner Hardesty interested in proposing a wholly new oversight body?

She fundamentally doesn't believe we can fix a system that by design wields little power and holds little public trust. We have learned many lessons over the years about the best ways to provide police oversight and we can carry the victories and lessons from the past into a new system.

Why are we moving so quickly?

This has been one of the top community asks for decades and this moment presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to push this forward. In order for council to successfully refer anything to the November ballot, it must be voted on by the last week of July 2020 and filed by July 15th.

The timeline for moving this forward is quick and we want to gather as much community input as possible.
The final language for a new independent community oversight board that would be referred to voters this November is still being developed through conversations with community advocates and city council colleagues. This community input combined with Commissioner Hardesty's decades of conversations on this topic will inform the language in the final proposal.
