*** Housing Justice in New York: A Civic Leadership Seminar at SLU ***

SESSION 1:
Saturday, October 9, 2021 - 10am-12pm (ET) - via Zoom

History of Urban Housing Inequality in the United States

This session examines the history of urban housing inequality in the United States. The presenters will discuss how the history of racial and class inequality has led to the current housing crisis in our country. Topics covered include: the Great Migration, the subsequent “redlining” of African American neighborhoods, suburbanization and white flight, “Urban Renewal” and gentrification.

Speaker: James Rodriguez, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies, CUNY SLU

SESSION 2:
Saturday, October 16, 2021 - 10am-12pm (ET) - via Zoom

The Real Estate Industry and the Urban Housing Crisis

This session explores the effect that the real estate industry has had on the housing market. Speculation, land-use controls and subsidies (rezoning or “up-zoning”) that lean heavily in favor of luxury developments or for high-end retailers rather than creating more affordable housing options have created a slew of issues for working class renters. The discussion will include how private investment corporations directly contribute to housing inequality in urban areas but also how the state is complicit in causing further housing inequality through public-private partnerships.

Speaker – Tom Angotti, Professor Emeritus of Urban Policy and Planning at Hunter College and
the Graduate Center

SESSION 3:
Saturday, October 23, 2021 - 10am-12pm (ET) - via Zoom

Housing Justice Movements in the Post-Pandemic Era

This session explores the problems that working-class renters and homeowners face, how the pandemic exacerbates these housing issues, and the current strategic challenges and advances of housing justice organizations and the #CancelRent Movement to provide housing stability and equality for those who are facing rent-burden and displacement. This session also explores solutions to combat displacement through the expansion of federal and public housing programs and community-based organizing to empower tenants and neighborhoods.

Speakers - Barika Williams, Executive Director of ANHD and Cea Weaver, Campaign Coordinator of Housing Justice For All
