NO MORE LOTTERIES: Bring Back Objective Screens for Middle School and High School Admissions

Yes! Please add my name to this PLACE NYC letter urging Chancellor Banks and NYC DOE to bring back objective measures for middle and high school admissions.

September 2022

Dear Chancellor Banks:

We urge you to end the use of the lottery for middle school and high school admissions. Lottery admissions was introduced during Covid-19 due to a lack of consistent metrics, such as grades, assessments and test scores.

We had a full year of in-person school which included  annual state tests and regular report card grades. It is now possible to make a full return to admissions standards for screened schools. Let’s do it. Academically advanced students need programs that meet their needs the same way performing arts programs nurture kids who demonstrate talent and IEPs support students who need them. Screened schools provide appropriate education for students that can meet the rigorous coursework they provide.

Many families left NYC public schools because of the failures of the lottery system. Parents do not want their child’s education to be based on lucky lottery numbers. To continue lottery admissions would exacerbate our declining enrollment and deprive students of the education that meets their needs..

A child’s appropriate education is not a prize to be won in a lottery. Please reinstate academic screening at previously screened schools.

Regards,
