Flat Fix Workshop & Fundraiser for the AbuShanab Family
Learn to fix a bicycle flat tire at this 3-hour hands-on workshop and support the AbuShanab family in surviving the ongoing, US-funded genocide in Gaza. The workshop will take place on Friday, April 10th from 6-9pm at SWANA Rose.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice removing a tire and inner tube from a bike wheel, patch the tube, replace, and inflate. All materials will be provided, including wheels and tools. No experience required! No need to bring a bike, just your questions and willingness to learn a new skill. Skills taught transfer to all types of bikes with tubular tires.
All ages welcome, but it’s geared towards teens and grown-ups. 100% of funds raised will go to the AbuShanab family. Registration and payment of $20-$50 is required to reserve a spot, and will be limited to 20 participants. Masks required and provided. Please email mahinshakerinsweet@gmail.com with any questions!
How to sign up:
In addition to filling out this form, please send your donation of $20-$50 to secure your spot before April 10th. Venmo @Mahin-Sweet with your name and “Flat Fix” in the description or email a screenshot of your donation receipt to the AbuShanab Family’s GoFundMe to mahinshakerinsweet@gmail.com.
More details about the workshop:
Mahin will start off with a welcome and outline what to expect for the workshop. They will first provide a demonstration of removing a tire, tube, applying a patch, and re-installing and inflating it back on a wheel. Then, participants will work in pairs to practice these skills, with Mahin available for additional support. Practice will only be on wheels already removed from bikes, with no full bikes present. Please note the workshop will only cover repairing tubed tires, not tubeless. For the second half of the workshop, participants will be able to ask personalized questions about their specific bike, with the option of bringing photos or their actual bike for Mahin to check out. As this is a hands-on workshop, Mahin will not be performing any bike repairs, but is happy to look at your bike outside to provide information or suggestions. If you do bring your bike, please keep it outside and lock it securely, as there is not space to accommodate bikes inside SWANA Rose. Participants may also choose to repeat the hands-on portion and practice changing another flat tire.

About the instructor:
Mahin Sweet (they/them) led a former life as a bicycle mechanic and instructor for over a decade in six different small bike shops. They understand how intimidating it can feel to be a marginalized individual within the bicycle industry, and want to share any and everything they can to help their community enjoy both the power and joy of bikes. They do their best to avoid jargon and judgment, and to teach collaboratively to allow space for people to learn in ways that are best for them. This workshop is inspired by a curriculum they co-created in 2022 as the first class of a 4-part beginner mechanics workshop. Mahin brings more of a summer camp counselor vibe than a Serious Spandex Bike Person vibe to teaching, and hopes you will agree.
Please read on to provide some information about you and to acknowledge important notes about the workshop and the space.
