2019 Iowa Immigrant & Refugee Organizing Academy Nomination Form
Use this form to reserve a spot for yourself or to nominate someone you think should be granted a spot in Iowa's first ever organizing training for and by immigrants and refugees!
Goal of training: To train immigrant and refugee leaders in community organizing and strategy. To help develop stronger ties between immigrant and refugee communities in Iowa.
Topics: Community organizing 101, how to choose and issue, building campaign strategy, recruitment and one-on-ones, meeting with decision makers, direct action, turning our pain into power, accountability, working in coalitions and strategy/campaign evaluation.
Logistics: Summer 2019, 5 weekly sessions starting Tuesday, July 30th, August 6th, August 13th, August 20 and Graduation August 27th. 5:30pm-8:30pm. Dinner will be provided. Sessions will be in English. Childcare could be provided with enough notice from participants. Location: TBD (Des Moines). Facilitators also identify as immigrants or have a connection to organizing on immigrants' rights issues.
Who should apply to participate: Anyone who considers themselves to be or would like to be a leader in the immigrant and/or refugee community in Iowa. Participants would ideally have a basic knowledge of advocacy and have a desire to learn more about how to build power through community organizing.
