Safety & Machine Damage Risks

Using the 3-D Printer presents the following risks:

Personal Safety Risks:

  • Burns
  • Cuts
  • Mechanical hazards from moving parts
  • High voltage
  • Generation of ultrafine/nano-sized particles
  • Chemical vapors depending on the media being used

Machine Damage Risks:

  • Electrical Damage
  • Build plate damage
  • Damage to print head
  • Damage to motor

Rules and Policies

Please read the following safety rules and policies carefully.  These policies are designed to keep you safe.

  • Do not move the 3-D printer or change the outlet that it is plugged into; only a trained staff member may move the 3-D printer. Moving the 3-D printer could lead to electrical damage or the machines becoming unlevel.
  • Never touch the build plate, print head, print or nozzle while the printer is pre-heating, printing, or cooling. These parts heat to over 200°C and could cause serious burn damage.
  • Never place your hands inside the 3-D printer while parts are moving or preparing to move, this could cause injury to yourself or damage to the machine.  Do not attempt to manually move the build plate or print head.
  • Be aware that during operation the heating of PLA filament may release nanoparticles and chemical vapor in the air.  The Makerspace only allows use of PLA (Polylactic acid- a plastic), as other materials create stronger vapors.

When removing parts from a tray, try to avoid using knives or scrapers. Attempt twisting off the tray to break parts loose. If you must use a knife or scraper, always push away from yourself with reasonable force. Never put your hand or any part of your body in the potential path of the sharp object. Ask for staff help removing prints that are hard to remove.

Please note the locations of heated parts as mentioned in rule 2.  Keep your hands away from these parts.  Also note the smooth aluminum rods the print head travels across during the print job.  Avoid reaching your hand into the print area as mentioned in rule 3 to avoid crush damage from the moving print head.
