Pacific Science Center's Science Communication Fellowship Program
Do you wish you were better able to explain to colleagues, friends, and strangers the work you do and why it matters? Do you need a venue to share your work with the local community? Develop your skills and bring STEM outside your workplace with Pacific Science Center’s Science Communication Fellowship Program. For more than a decade, this program has enabled STEM-based professionals in industry and academia to learn and practice effective communication strategies, develop hands-on programming about their work, and connect with public audiences.

Any individual in the greater Seattle area with a bachelor’s degree and whose work involves STEM is eligible to participate.

Tuition for our science communication course is $2,000. Full and partial scholarship options are detailed below.

Participant Commitments and Course Schedule
As a participant in the Science Communication Fellowship Program, you will be expected to do three things:
1. Participate in the full Science Communication Course at Pacific Science Center. *
We will meet from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. on the following Thursdays: March 26, April 2, April 9, April 16, April 23, and April 30. Our final workshop on Saturday, May 9 will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendance is expected at all sessions. If you know that you will have to miss one of these days, please inform us now so that we can work out an alternative. Anticipated time commitment: 20 hours (over 7 weeks)

2. Develop a hands-on activity related to your work. *
Ample concept development support will be provided by Pacific Science Center staff, including a 90-minute individual meeting at your workplace to be scheduled between March 30 and April 10. You will use this activity in public programming at Pacific Science Center. Anticipated time commitment: 10 hours (over 7 weeks)

3. Participate in a minimum of 3 public events at Pacific Science Center each year. *
Your early programming opportunities will focus on Meet a Scientist, an event that features Science Communication Fellows with their activities many Saturday afternoons. After this initial commitment, other programming opportunities will become available to you, including adults-only events, lectures, youth and teen programs, and more. Anticipated time commitment: 3.5 hours x 3 events = 10.5 hours (over roughly 9 months)

Tuition and Scholarships
Tuition for the Science Communication Course is $2,000 per participant. Participants (or their sponsor organizations) will be invoiced after accepting a place in the program. Payment is due within 30 days of invoicing. Most participants secure funding through grants or through support of their affiliate institutions. If you would like our assistance in pursuing support by providing information to use in requests or if the cost poses a significant hardship, please reach out to PAdmin@pacsci.org.

For Fall 2020, the following scholarships are available:

Pacific Science Center IDEA Scholarship
Eligibility: any applicant who would contribute to inclusivity, diversity, equitability, and accessibility (IDEA) efforts in our programming
Maximum request: $2,000
Awards anticipated: 1

Pacific Science Center Cost-Sharing Scholarship
Eligibility: any applicant whose sponsor organization cannot cover the full tuition cost
Maximum request: $1,500
Awards anticipated: multiple

If you are not selected to receive scholarship funding or receive an amount smaller than you requested, would you still like to be considered for acceptance into the Science Communication Fellowship Program?
Multiple criteria, including field of work, quality of application, and contributions toward the institution’s inclusivity, diversity, equitability, and accessibility initiatives are used to determine awards. Depending on availability of funding, awards may be made in amounts smaller than requested.
