DEAR LGBTQ PEOPLE: WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK.
We, the undersigned, are people in the greater Battle Creek region who believe in God.

Some of us are members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer communities. Some of us are straight allies. We all want to live in a loving community that fully embraces those of us who are LGBTQ.

Together, we publicly, unequivocally, affirm the following:

- SAME SEX LOVE IS BEAUTIFUL AND SACRED. With John the Evangelist we affirm that “God is love.” There is nothing inherently sinful about same sex love, nor opposite sex love.
- LGBTQ PEOPLE BELONG TO GOD. There is nothing inherently contradictory about being an LGBTQ person who is a person of faith.
- ALL PEOPLE ARE WORTHY OF DIGNITY, RESPECT, LOVE, JUST TREATMENT, AND FREEDOM. All citizens deserve safe schools, employment and housing protection, good healthcare, and of course, equal civil rights under the law.
- DIFFERENCES ARE NORMAL AND GOOD IN A FREE SOCIETY. Differences in religious belief or doctrine must never result in ridicule, abuse, discrimination, or social oppression.
- GOOD PEOPLE CAN DISAGREE ABOUT RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE. Good-hearted, well-intended people can come to different understandings about the teachings of scripture with regards to same sex love.
- WE ARE CALLED TO LIVE IN PEACEFUL COOPERATION WITH ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS OF FAITH AND NO FAITH. We are called to receive and make room for the unique needs and unique callings that different people have upon their lives.
- WE ARE CALLED TO SOW SEEDS OF LOVE AND INCLUSION IN OUR HOMES, NEIGHBORHOODS, SCHOOLS, PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT, HALLS OF GOVERNMENT, AND COMMUNITIES OF WORSHIP. We will support LGBTQ people however we can, given the opportunities before us.

May our shared commitment to a more perfect, more inclusive, more loving community give way to a better Battle Creek for ourselves and all of our children, in the fullness of who we are and are yet to become.

In peace and loving kindness,
