StreamSmart is a volunteer water quality monitoring program run by Ozarks Water Watch to assess baseline water quality of the streams and rivers that flow into Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas. Through the program, local volunteers collect water samples and complete field assessments through a standardized water quality monitoring process.

Monitoring is conducted quarterly each February, May, August, and November. The monitoring period begins at 1:00pm on the first Saturday of the monitoring month and extends through the following Thursday with an additional monitoring opportunity on the second Saturday and Sunday of the monitoring month. Only one monitoring event is required during the water quality monitoring period, for a total of four monitoring events each year. Monitoring periods may be adjusted according to weather conditions.

StreamSmart volunteers should be high school or older. Volunteers need to feel comfortable being outside in hot and cold weather, walking outdoors across uneven terrain, entering streams, walking and standing in streams teams, and following written procedures. Volunteer teams are normally comprised of 3-5 people, but some teams have as many as 10 people on the team who are trained to collect water samples and take field measurements. Teams with more members have a greater capacity to share monitoring responsibilities among team members.

StreamSmart data is collected, compiled, and reported through quarterly reports, an annual program report, and the annual Status of the Watershed Report produced by Ozarks Water Watch. Volunteers are highly encouraged to complete StreamSmart training or to have completed Master Naturalist training. Each team is required to have at least 1 team member complete StreamSmart Training.

Information collected below will be used to develop and coordinate a monitoring team for Prairie Creek (site 306). If you are interested in monitoring a different site please visit www.owwbeaverlake.org

StreamSmart Volunteer Training will be held on Saturday, July 14 at the Don Tyson Center for Agricultural Sciences off of Garland Avenue in Fayetteville. Attendance is free and registration is required at https://goo.gl/forms/NXMvFBsp59OmbSbI2
