All freshmen at Carter High School have at least 6 classes.

Four of those classes will be core classes: English, Math, Science, and PE.  These classes will be decided for you by your counselor based upon your current classes, your current grades, your state test scores, and your teachers' recommendations.  You may be placed in support classes if it looks like you need help to succeed in your core subjects.

In addition to those 4 classes, you may have two electives.
Honors Classes?  (Not Required)
Are you interested in challenging yourself with a more rigorous class?  Honors classes are for those students who are passionate about a specific subject area and want to push themselves to work harder and prepare to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes later in high school.  We will be looking at your current classes and grades to help us initially make this decision, but please tell us which, if any, honors classes you are interested in taking.
AVID? (Not Required)
AVID ("Advancement Via Individual Determination") is a program with the goal of helping students to be eligible for a four-year college when they graduate from high school.  YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY TO AVID SEPARATELY BEFORE YOUR COUNSELOR CAN PLACE YOU IN THE CLASS.  IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED TO AVID, WE WILL PLACE YOU IN THE AVID 9 CLASS AS ONE OF YOUR ELECTIVES.  Are you interested in applying for AVID?

ALPHA Scholars is a program at Carter that supports students wanting to take as many honors and AP classes as they can fit into their schedule because they are wanting to be competitive for a highly selective college.  YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY TO ALPHA SCHOLARS SEPARATELY TO BE ADMITTED TO THE COHORT.  Are you interested in applying for ALPHA Scholars?

Early College is a district program that allows students to take classes through Valley College as part of their 6 period schedule. YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY TO EARLY COLLEGE SEPARATELY BEFORE YOUR COUNSELOR CAN PLACE YOU IN THE CLASSES.   Are you interested in applying for Early College?
