Share your stories on building student knowledge
The National Council on Teacher Quality (www.nctq.org) is looking to hear from elementary teachers across the country who can speak to the importance of building students' content knowledge across all elementary grades--and why it is so essential that teachers also have a strong foundation of content knowledge.

We want to include teacher voices like yours in our campaign to persuade higher education institutions and teacher prep programs to give higher priority to teacher knowledge, ensuring that every teacher candidates gains the necessary knowledge of science, mathematics, literature, history, geography, and civics. We are also supporting state efforts to verify that every institution preparing teachers delivers this content, giving teachers the tools needed to do their jobs.

We'll be posting these teacher voices in our campaign materials and on our website.  Would you join us by sharing your own story?

Briefly speak to your own experience either as a teacher candidate or as a teacher on the importance of content knowledge as an essential element of good teaching.  We want to hear both positive and negative experiences.  Here are some suggested topics to pick from: How well were you prepared to teach all the subjects you're now asked to teach?  Did you struggle to pass your licensing tests because of what you didn't know? How has your own content knowledge enriched your instruction?  Has your lack of content knowledge in some subjects hindered your ability to be effective?  Why do you think building student knowledge is important anyway?  Have you found that learning content as you teach works well?   *
Can we quote your statement in our report, website, or other materials? *
