Every month, Of One Heart (OOH) hosts an event for refugees, mentors and the community. These events help to connect us together, through activities that foster relationships, cultural awareness classes, and building skills. It is also a special opportunity for community groups to give service, both in person and through donations. VOLUNTEERING AT OOH EVENT: Helping at an event with our refugees and mentors, which includes providing and serving refreshments, staffing the children's classes, handing out gifts, and then helping in other areas as needed. After the children's class is staffed, other areas that might require help depending on your group size could be adult breakout classes, assigned to a refugee friend for the night, setup/cleanup, etc. EVENT HELP fills up quickly, and we are typically booked months in advance.

REFUGEE GIFTS: Each monthly event has a theme of focus for classes and gifts. For refugees, gifts may represent a replacement of a minute part of their loss, a compensation for the time they spend at our events to heal WITH the community instead of working, alleviating basic needs, introducing new culture or of a caring community welcoming them home. REFUGEE GIFTS can be collected and put together, like food boxes or school supplies, or can be made, like a fall harvest wreath or gratitude journals. Make it extra special by adding a personal note! !

REFUGEE RAFFLES: Every month we reward those refugees who arrive on time to our events by raffling off fun items that inspire and fulfill wishes, coinciding with our monthly themes. For example, a basket of health and wellness items like a jump rope, water bottle and workout mat. .

THE REFUGEE JOURNEY: An interactive presentation about WHO a refugee is compared to your life, with real pictures, stories and simulations. This is more than cognitive understanding. We create understanding with the heart and soul that creates a desire to help those in need and better our community. We have a faith-based and non-religious presentation. It works for groups of all sizes from schools to work, family reunions to church groups, but is best for 8+. (Please schedule possible dates below if interested.) If you are interested, please list best dates/times to host this presentation, and we will contact you to schedule.

Our events are typically the first Thursday evenings of the month. We are exploring the possibility of changing to Saturday evenings in 2023, but are currently still scheduled for Thursday evenings. Please list, in order of preference, 3 different months you are available to serve and we will do our best to accommodate, according to availability. We will contact you to confirm dates and details. Please note: Due to interest, events are typically scheduled months in advance. Currently, we only have a few openings left in 2023. So apply soon! *

Our events offer unique one-on-one contact with those you serve! It is an invaluable experience to befriend, learn about cultures, and share together. Because our volunteer events fill up quickly, please also consider volunteering with Gathering Humanity, who is our fiscal sponsor. Gathering Humanity (GH) provides our refugees with needed items from cloth diapers to lamps. Please contact GH at (928) 421-3446 info@gatheringhumanity.org. GH has a service center in Gilbert and a warehouse in Tempe. Service opportunities, like gathering supplies and donating, are available at either location or at your facility if an OOH event does not work with your schedule, and you are always welcome to pair it with a Refugee Journey presentation above.
