Dear Arts Educator,
We are pleased to invite your participation in one of Garrison Art Center’s longest running educational outreach programs, the SITE Program. For those of you who are not familiar, SITE stands for School Invitational Theme Exhibition and is a school-based outreach program to Hudson Valley Elementary, Middle and High Schools that encourages teachers to engage their students in a theme-based project to be exhibited in the Riverside Galleries at the Art Center. Our goal is to encourage students in cross-curriculum learning while supporting artistic confidence by allowing them to exhibit their work in a gallery setting.
This year’s SITE theme is: Express Yourself: exploring Abstract Expressionism
Stretch your creativity and let the art flow with explorations into abstract expressionism. Emerging in New York following World War II, Abstract Expressionism was the first specifically American art movement to reach a level of international impact. Focusing on experimentation and action while forgoing conventional techniques and subject matter, the Abstract Expressionists used drips, stains, shapes, marks, textures, colorfields, gesture, improvisation, and whatever else they could get their hands on.
Explore the action paintings of Jackson Pollock, the soak stain technique of Helen Frankenthaler, the figural work of Willem De Kooning, the photography of Aaron Siskind, the colorfields of Mark Rothko, the collage paintings of Lee Krasner, the steel sculptures of Mark Di Suvero, and the civil rights works of Norman Lewis.
SITE 2020 will include grades K – 12 and the exhibition dates are scheduled for March 7 – 15, 2020. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 3 – 5pm. Please fill out the attached application and return it by email or mail no later than Friday, December 20, 2019. There is no registration fee, but space is limited to the first 18 schools that submit complete applications. Do not hesitate to call us at 845-424-3960 with any questions or concerns.
