OMS Exploratory Options for 2021-2022

Read through the course descriptions below.

Art - Dive into 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design using pencil, paint, and other mediums. Topics include graffiti, landscape painting, drawing with perspective, and color theory. No art skills are necessary. You only need a desire to grow as an artist.

Band - Middle school band introduces and develops musical concepts and skills related to instrumental music. Students learn to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument and perform music. No previous experience is required. Participation in a performing group offers the students the opportunity to experience a high level of teamwork, develop a high degree of personal responsibility, and acquire leadership skills. (This class is for the whole year.)

Choir - Middle school choir introduces and develops musical concepts and skills related to choral music. Students learn to sing and perform music. No previous experience is required. Participation in a performing group offers the students the opportunity to experience a high level of teamwork, develop a high degree of personal responsibility, and acquire leadership skills. (This class is for the whole year.)

Keyboarding - This class is designed to master knowledge on the skills required to successfully use the alphabetic, numeric, and symbolic functions of the keyboard.

PE - This class is designed to develop physical fitness, motor ability, sportsmanship, teamwork, and a knowledge of physical health and overall wellness.

Personal Finance - This class is designed to help you prepare for the real world! With the foundations in Personal Finance, YOU can learn how to make a budget, build an emergency fund, and pay CASH for college.

Spanish - This class focuses on a study of the language, culture, and customs unique to the Spanish-speaking world. Students will learn the course material at an introductory level vis the world-readiness standards for learning languages: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.

STEM/Computer Science - This course is a 2-part course. The first part of the course will focus on integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through project-based learning. Students will work their way through the Engineering Design Process while applying their own creative ideas to create solutions to various problems involving rollercoasters, 3-D printing & design, paper airplanes/cars, and more. Each unit of study will include a research & design component, a project component, and a lab component. The second part of the course will focus on computer science where students will work with robots and will learn to code & create their own web page or animated game.

Strength & Conditioning (only open to OMS athletes) - This class is an introduction to weightlifting and conditioning. Students will learn the principles of fitness and apply those principles to movement patterns designed to promote functional strength, fitness, and athleticism.

Teen Living - Upon completion of this course, students will understand components of healthy lifestyles, lifespan development, communication skills, relationship development, career exploration, appropriate use of technology, and resource management.
