Knitting Time Calculator
If you'd like me to make something for you, here's one way to calculate the cost.
Dr. Who Scarf
What would you like me to make for you?
Hours below are provided as estimates only. Some knitters may be faster and others may craft a little more slowly. Some knitters prefer to charge by the length of yarn used (10-25 cents per yard, depending on knitter's expertise and project difficulty).
Large project like a blanket or adult sweater (100+ hours / 1200-3000+ yards)
Doctor Who scarf (75 hours to infinity) (boredom surcharge may apply unless trip in Tardis is supplied)
Lace shawl (50-75 hours / 500-2000 yards) (Surcharges may apply for adding beads)
Adult scarf (15-30 hours, depending on length, number of colours, pattern, thickness of yarn used / 300-500 yards)
Baby or child's sweater (15-40 hours / 300-800 yards)
Adult socks or legwarmers (20 hours / 300-600 yards)
Mittens, gloves (15 hours, may be 20+ hours if colour work or beading is involved / 200-400 yards)
Child socks (10 hours / 150-200 yards)
Small project like a dishcloth or toy (2-10 hours depending on complexity / 50-100 yards)
Will you be supplying the yarn?
Please consult knitter on allergies and fiber preferences, as discounts may be available or surcharges may be required.
Yes, and it will be merino, silk or cashmere (10-25% discount might be available)
Yes, and it will be acrylic (surcharge may apply)
Yes, I found the perfect yarn at the thrift store last year (surcharge may apply, especially if the yarn smells like mothballs)
No, I'd like the knitter to supply the yarn (Please note: Luxury yarn such as silk or cashmere can be $20-$30 per ball. Yarn for an inexpensive baby sweater usually starts at $30. One ball of sock yarn is $20-$30.)
No, I'd like the knitter to spin the yarn as well or use handspun yarn (Please note: It takes between 5 to 40+ hours to spin up 4 oz of yarn, depending on thickness of yarn and experience of spinner)
Are you a member of your knitter's immediate family? (50-100% discount, typically more if your knitter gave birth to you)
Are you willing to swap your professional services on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Are you willing to clean knitter's home on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Are you willing to cook meals for your knitter on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Are you willing to take care of knitter's child(ren) on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Are you willing to take care of knitter's lawn and garden on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Are you willing to pay for a cleaner, cook, babysitter or gardener on an hour-for-hour basis? (100% discount)
Do you have another proposal to replace the hours I will be using to make something for you? (Type it below in "other")
Here's where you can calculate your cost for the project you would like me to make for you.
Please consult with your knitter to ensure that all appropriate surcharges and/or discounts have been applied.
Minimum wage in your province/state/country
Multiply the minimum wage x hours estimated for your project
Multiply by the number of years your knitter has been learning the craft (consult knitter, as there may be a discount if your project doesn't need that level of experience and craftsmanship)
Less discount as indicated in discount structure above
Add any applicable surcharges as outlined above
Type your answer in "Other" below.
What happens now?
Wow, that's expensive. My nana used to knit whatever I wanted for free. (Bye bye)
Can you teach me how to knit? (Please visit your local yarn store or find a local crafting teacher to find out what it costs, then treat your knitting teacher accordingly.)
I will print this page and bring it to my knitter.
