This is a student competition.
Students can solicit advice from others, but the work should be done by students. Your goal will be to determine how the MLB rule changes in 2023 affected the value of infield defense.
This could be from a player evaluation, overall run prevention, or some other perspective.
The data set will include SIS proprietary defensive measures, player location, and hit location. Data dictionary and references will be provided. The data can be merged with any free publicly available data set. Use of AI is permitted. AI sources should be cited. Students are responsible for understanding their output and must be able to answer questions about methodology.
Data link has been sent to those registered by 3/2/26. New registrants will receive automatic email from form.
Submissions are due March 19
Teams or individuals must submit a video presentations of less than 5 minutes. Presentations will be evaluated and finalists will be chosen to present at the Ohio State Sports Analytics conference. There are three spots available for online presentations on March 26 and 3 slots available for in-person presentations on March 28. (Ohio State students are only eligible for in-person presentation.) Students not chosen as finalists are welcome to participate with a poster presentation.
An email with the official prompt and access to data will be sent to registrants on March 2. If you are participating as a group, you will provide a list of group members with the submission.
