History...
The Festival of Trees Scholarship is supported by the proceeds from the Festival of Trees which is held every other year at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth. The Festival of Trees is cosponsored by the Portsmouth Garden Club and the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands –Urban Forestry Center. The event brings together garden centers, garden clubs, businesses, and individuals who inspire thousands of visitors with ideas for holiday celebration and decorating. Since 1983 more than $100,000 has been donated to educational programs, beautification projects and
historic homes throughout Portsmouth and surrounding towns.
The Portsmouth Garden Club was established in 1931 to promote all phases of gardening, to practice and encourage the conservation of our natural resources, to foster educational goals and to initiate projects which provide cooperative efforts to increase and protect the beauty and history of the Portsmouth area. For more information go to www.portsmouthnhgardenclub.com.
The Urban Forestry Center is managed by the New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Forests and Lands. The 182 acre property was a gift to the people of New Hampshire by John Elwyn Stone in 1976. The purpose of the Center is to increase awareness of the importance of natural resources. Our mission is accomplished through educational programs, selfguided trails and demonstration gardens. The property is open to the public for walking/hiking, bird watching, biking, snowshoeing and appreciating nature.
