2019 #AnytownKC Volunteer Application
The Anytown Youth Leadership Institute™ is a residential leadership program for youth ages 15-18 focused on anti-oppression and social justice with the mission to inspire a young generation of leaders who are ready and willing to dismantle the multiple forms of privilege and oppression to create more just and inclusive communities. This summer’s camp will be hosted on July 14-19 on the campus of Avila University. Volunteers report on-site the day prior (July 13) and remain for the entire 6-day program as leaders of the activities and discussions and guiding the youth participants throughout the leadership experience. Volunteers will sleep in the residence hall along with the youth participants. Meals will be provided and are not the financial responsibility of volunteers.

A shortlist of Anytown-KC philosophies are:
• There is no hierarchy of oppression.
• Prejudice is learned and can be unlearned.
• Diversity is a salad, not a melting pot.
• Youth are leaders of today and tomorrow.
• Willingness to recognize and honor the intersectionality of the multiple forms of oppression.
• Trust the process!

If you think you can “get down” with all of this and have talents and skills to contribute as a volunteer, then we excitedly invite you to submit an application! We encourage all applicants to mark your calendars to attend the first volunteer training on Sunday May 26 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at Avila University. Selection decisions will be made by the Steering Committee and Co-Directors to fill the available volunteer slots after the first volunteer training. Selected volunteers should plan to attend additional trainings on either Saturday or Sunday the weekends of June 8-9 and June 29-30 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at Avila University. Commitment to attend the trainings is important in order for the volunteer staff to form an effective team, to learn the program curriculum, and to prepare for the role of coaching participants. For questions, please contact us at AnytownKC@gmail.com.

Co-Directors are in charge of organizing the curriculum and leading the delegates through discussion during camp as well as leading the staff through trainings. This is a significant time commitment before camp. These people need to be comfortable with the Anytown philosophies as well as leading large group discussions. Must also be available to stay the night. Family Group Leaders need to be available to attend all trainings and to stay the night all nights of camp. These folks are interacting with and mentoring youth. At least one logistics person needs to be available throughout the entire camp, while another might be on call and available most days. This position not only anticipates and responds to the supply and set-up needs of the co-directors and family group leaders, but also maintains first aid and other supplies as well as the emergency contact information for the delegates and any staff under 18. A second logistics staff could be on call and come and go as needed. The observer/mentor would need to be available all camp days and can preferably stay the night. This is a hands-off role that takes note of how activities are being conducted. This person would also serve as a resource for camp staff to provide a listening ear and feedback. OFT (Organized Free Time) volunteers will come to camp only during our scheduled free time. These people might have a skill to offer or an educational component to teach. Examples of past volunteers: screen printing class (brought all needed supplies and taught small group of delegates screen printing), sports activities (hosted a game of soccer or basketball with the delegates), yoga (taught a group of delegates yoga, brought extra mats for delegates to use). If you have a unique skill or idea for free time, please sign up and we will discuss how you can contribute.
