CJR Survey: Reporting Sexual Misconduct in Newsrooms (Freelancers)
In light of the ongoing news surrounding reports of sexual harassment within news media organizations, the Columbia Journalism Review is looking into how newsrooms around the country handle these kinds of reports. As part of that effort, we released a survey asking journalists to share their understanding of newsroom policies, and their experience navigating them (a separate survey has been sent to newsroom leadership). The response has been strong, but we received feedback from freelancers who wondered whether the initial survey was inclusive enough of their unique work situations. So we've created another survey specifically for freelance journalists.

If you are a staff journalist working at any news organization, there is a different survey for you. You can access it here: https://goo.gl/forms/SdHD91AvUrTQnRgJ3

Our goal remains the same: to do the hard work of taking a serious look at where we, as an industry, fall short on our responsibility to keep reporters safe. To do so, we need your help.

We know this is a significant and sensitive request. But we believe it is a crucial one, especially if we are to hold ourselves to the same accountability standards we demand of other industries. We want to learn about your understanding of sexual misconduct policies at newsrooms with which you work—and if you choose to share, about your personal experiences navigating them—because we believe our industry can and must do better.
