LEVEL 1A Mamayog Course
FEBRUARY 21st and 28th (Saturdays) 6:00 AM - 8:45 AM PHT (two Zoom sessions, 2hrs 45mins each)
A beginner course where participants learn about the Kutiyapi’s historical and sociocultural context, tuning, basic hand techniques and repertoire, and learn to play the piece Mamayog though oral pedagogy. Participants must have a 2-string lute to use for the course. Non-Maguindanaoan lutes will most likely be re-fretted. If you don't have a lute, a guitar (not a ukulele) may be used as substitute.
ELIGIBILITY: This transgenerational course is open to all ages (children will require adult supervision).
Eligible to enroll in the Level 1A MAMAYOG course are those who:
1. are committed to learn the Kutiyapi
2. have proficiency in guitar or playing a stringed instrument (Western music training is NOT required)
3. have their lutes or guitars ready (in the course of the training, students will have the opportunity to order a Kutiyapi from Guro Karatuan Kalanduyan)
LEVEL 3B Kasumba sa Luwasan, Part 2 Course
FEBRUARY 22nd and MARCH 1st (Sundays) 6:00 AM - 8:45 AM PHT (two Zoom sessions, 2hrs 45mins each)
Participant will learn the complete Kasumba sa Luwasan piece, improvisation techniques, and review lessons from earlier Kutiyapi courses. Learners must have a kutiyapi or 2-stringed lute.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible to enroll in the Level 3B KASUMBA SA LUWASAN course are those who:1. have mastered Level 1A Mamayog and/or Level 1B Talitay and have taken
the Level 2 Binalig and Level 3A Kasumba sa Luwasan course and would like to continue refining their playing
2. have a Maguindanaoan Kutiyapi, preferably made by Guro Karatuan Kalanduyan
3. are ready to learn or to continue learning improvisation
TALK-DEMONSTRATION:
FEBRUARY 21st (Saturday) 6:00 AM - 7:30 AM PHT (1.5hrs over )
Participants will attend the first 1.5 hrs. of the Level 1 course on February 21st. They will witness a Kutiyapi performance from a master player, learn about Guro Karatuan’s teaching levels, the Kutiyapi’s tuning, construction, and socio-cultural and historical context. If interested to learn further, participant may opt to take the rest of the two-weekend course or enroll in the basic Kutiyapi course once it is offered again.

REGISTRATION FEE:
Courses: Php2,500 (Philippine-based registrants) / $90 (overseas-based registrants)
Talk-Demonstration: Sliding Scale, with minimum amount of PHP 500 for Philippines-based registrants and $US 30 for overseas-based registrants

ABOUT GURO (Teacher):
KARATUAN KALANDUYAN hails from the illustrious musical family, the Kalanduyans of Sultan sa Barungis, Maguindanao. He is a master player of the Kutiyapi (2-string lute), the instruments of the Kulintang ensemble, the luntang (hanging wooden xylophone), and the tumpong (lip valley flute). He has toured extensively in the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, China, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States.
ABOUT FACILITATORS:
THERESA CALPOTURA, Course Facilitator for the Level 2 course and Media Facilitator, is a Kutiyapi student of Guro Karatuan. She is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division and is an award-winning guitarist who has performed at prestigious venues in the United States and the Philippines.
REJ CRUZ is a full-time faculty at the UP Diliman Department of Anthropology with interests in traditional arts and music in the Philippines, folklore, and Deaf culture. He served as a board member of Ugnayang Pang-Agham Tao, and Aliguyon-UP Folklorists, Inc. Rej learned to play Maguindanao kulintang from Guro Aga Mayo Butocan, and recently learning kutyapi from Guro Karatuan Kalanduyan thru the Himig, Tula, at Galaw Ninuno classes.
