By referring to al-Ghazāli, al-Rāzī, and ibn Taymiyya as “thinkers”, this workshop aims to examine Kalām as a subject of inquiry and to identify, beyond the boundaries of their respective theological affiliations, whether any definition of Kalām, or its ideal form, can be discerned within their frameworks. What are these thinkers discussing when they reference “Kalām”? Is a clear and univocal definition of “Kalām” to be found in these thinkers’ views, and if so, to what extent does it influence their own inquiry and methodologies, either negatively or positively? This Workshop invites various prominent scholars to discuss these questions and propose their own interpretation of these thinkers’ views on theology, and beyond.
