#BlackBabiesDoSwim Enrollment form
Melanin Mommies PGH is launching a new program in collaboration with the Thelma Lovette YMCA!

The #BlackBabiesDoSwimPGH initiative was created to combat the stigma that black kids do not swim or don't know how to swim. In 2014, the CDC found that an 11-year-old black child is 10 times more likely to drown than a white child the same age. The notion that "black people can't swim” may sound like a stereotype, but it's a real disparity and it's rooted in a history of discriminatory access to swimming pools. Throughout history blacks were denied access to pools with clean water, attacked at segregated pools and unable to join local swim teams/lessons or compete in Olympic swim events.

In 2017, USA Swimming, the governing body for the sport of swimming in the U.S., found that 64 percent of African-American children have low or no swimming ability. And according to their data, black children and their parents are three times more fearful of drowning than white children and their parents.

Lets Work on changing these statistics!

#BlackBabiesDOSwimPgh Sessions
The next session and individual classes will begin October 7th, 2018. They are held on Sundays at the Thelma Lovette YMCA-Hill district. The rate is still discounted to $25 for 6 week group lessons and private individual lessons are $135 (let us know if you're interested in individual/private) Regular YMCA rates ranges from $50-$350. We are so appreciative to have these rate offered exclusively to us!

The sessions are separated into 3 categories (Keep in mind some children may show advanced abilities regardless of the session they are in and some children may show basic ability. All of these sessions are tailored based on the skill level of the children in the class. So it may take some time before you see your child display strong swimming skill as the children may be on different levels)

Water Discovery and exploration/Introduction to water: Parents accompany children in this stage. Water discover introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. Parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skill.

Water Acclimation and movement: Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student's future progress in swimming.students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Water Stamina and stroke development: In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.
