Community Survey - National Japanese Canadian Digitization Strategy
The National Japanese Canadian Digitization Strategy* aims to create and distribute a strategic plan that will provide guidance to institutions across Canada that aim to preserve and make accessible Japanese Canadian history and heritage. The long term goal of this project is to offer a more complete offering of digital archives* and items* for the preservation and research of Japanese Canadian history. This project will enrich museum offerings to the Japanese Canadian community, build awareness of and facilitate access to Japanese Canadian cultural heritage, and support future education.

The creation of a National Digitization Strategy is a joint project between the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (Burnaby, BC) and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (Toronto, ON), with support from the Kamloops Japanese Canadian Museum & Archives (Kamloops, BC), and the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre (New Denver, BC). In addition, we thank the National Association of Japanese Canadians (Winnipeg, MB) for their ongoing support. Federal grant funding pending.

This survey is to gather feedback from anyone interested in Japanese Canadian history and heritage and to help identify what the community would like to see preserved and made accessible online.

*Digitization refers to the process of transforming information into a digital format. For museums and archives, this includes high resolution scanning, photography, and converting outdated video or sound files into usable formats. In doing so, museum and archive collections can be accessed globally through online databases, and help preserve items at risk of physical damage (ie. passage of time, natural disasters, outdated technology).

*Archives are institutions that collect historical documents about a place, institution, or group of people. This includes personal documents, public records, business records, photographs, essays, newspapers, certificates, artwork, film, oral histories, items and more.

*Items refer to donated objects of historical significance to be preserved and/or put on display ("Items" were formerly known as "artifacts", however this is an outdated term). Items are accepted to an archive if they are relevant to the institution's mandate.
