SAMMAY Peñaflor Dizon (she/they/siya) has more than a decade of professional experience as a choreographer, director, performer, writer, educator, and cultural producer working cross dance, theatre, film, experimental performance, and conceptual art. She is a proud daughter of Filipino immigrants who hail from Bikol, Kapampangan, and Ilokano lineages. Born and raised in LA and bred by The Bay, they believe embodied practice is preventive care, and cultivate cross-cultural, intergenerational spaces of deep joy, radical pleasure, and liberatory praxis. Their work invites audiences to center ancestral knowledge, spiritual ritual, and critical belonging—to find the dance that lives at the crossroads. Currently, they are in development for Bianca Catbagan's Royal Blood, a short film that utilizes dance to explore and underscore our queer inheritance as descendants of the archipelago.
Dizon earned an MFA in Choreographic Inquiry from UCLA and a BA in Media Studies and Sociology from UC Berkeley. They are a recipient of the Gerbode Special Award in the Arts for Dance & Movement (2024); Izzie Award for Special Achievement in Dance (2021); Rainin New & Experimental Works Award (2021); and SFAC Individual Artist Commission: Dance (2020) among others. Their work has been presented by ODC Theater, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, San Francisco Dance Film Festival, and Show Box LA among others. They have received residencies and fellowships from CounterPulse, American Conservatory Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Music Center of Los Angeles among others. They have been a guest artist through the USF Performing Arts and Social Justice Department, UCSB Multicultural Center, and Harvard University Department of Theater, Dance, and Media among others. Dizon has performed and taught in Brazil, Peru, Canada, and the Philippines—and is always most delighted to bring their work back home.
